Mike Huckabee and Christmas

Yeah, I watch Huckabee sometimes. I tuned in last week and he was talking about Christmas, and about how important the birth of Christ was to him.

It got me to thinking about his support of the fair tax during his Presidential run. I am a big fan of the fair tax (or national sales tax), for the simple reason it's a lot easier to comply with than the income tax. No paper work, no reporting of anything to government unless you are a merchant.
Even though I liked this about him, I thought that for him it was mostly a sop for the economic conservative and libertarian factions of the party.

When I listened to him talk about the first Christmas, I became convinced his support of the fair tax was more heartfelt than I thought. Even though he didn't mention it on his show, the reason Mary and Joseph were away from home was to be taxed by Caesar Augustus. In other words, because of intrusive tax policies, the son of the Christian god had to be born in a barn. So of course a Baptist minister is going to support the fair tax!

He's no free marketer, though...wasn't he the guy who wanted resource use and CO2 production in America to drop to zero? That made me, to be honest, wonder about his intelligence.

...Or was it someone else...
I would agree he's no free marketer. I don't know about the CO2 thing, but he had some similar nutty ideas. I just like his support of the fair tax. If you want to say that's not enough, I won't argue with you.
Actually I was rereading my single hard-copy Reason magazine a while ago...and it was him. I was wrong on the details of what he said though.

The exact quote: "I think we ought to be out there talking about ways to reduce energy consumption and waste. And we ought to declare that we wil be free of energy consumption in this country within a decade, bold as that is."

Now you can see why I don't love Huckabees. :D Also, I was reading a book of outrageously wrong quotes today, but none of them came anything close to what this guy said!

For the record, I understand where the Fair Tax is coming from, although I must say I disagree with the specifics. But the jury's still out on that issue in my head.

Wow. That is a REALLY dumb quote. I'm sure that if he had gotten the nomination it would have become a much more well-known quote.
