Old Friends

Last night bastardx showed up at the coffee shop with his lovely wife  mrs. bastardx. Hmmm. There's probably something politically incorrect about that pseudonym, so let's just call her Madame X.

bx used to be a regular until he moved to Chester, SC. He now shows up only occasionally, and it's always good to see him when he does.

He came near closing time, so he and his wife and a bunch of other people hung around at the tables outside after closing time.
There were a lot of old customers, and it gave me a nice nostalgic feeling. Especially since people don't hang around 'till all hours after closing the way they used to.

There was lively conversation about tons of topics including birth control, gay marriage, and Barack Obama's birth certificate. Given these hot-button topics, the conversation was remarkably polite. Things got a little heated a couple of times, but all in all I think we had the most civil discussion anybody could possibly have on these issues.

The highlight (in my mind) came when we were talking about birth control. I of course told my story about combs and condoms. I also said that I practiced a foolproof method of birth control. "It's called being fat and obnoxious" I said.  That got a pretty big laugh. Then bastardx, who fathered his first child a couple of years ago said "that doesn't work." He got an even bigger laugh, and deserved it.

We ended up talking until 3 AM. You know you've got  quality friendships  when somebody says "holy shit, look at the time."

This is great. Being with friends always is...

I wonder if you disagree on those contentious issues, and how you managed to stay polite if that's the case. Because sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I met some of my liberal friends in person...especially the more, to say the least, opinionated ones!

We did disagree. Out of 7, there were 2 conservatives, one contrarian who goes after whoever is in power, and 4 liberals.

Probably the biggest factor is that most of us had been real life friends for years. And value friendship above politics.
The last sentence is the key, isn't it? :)

Sounds like you and your conservative friend were outnumbered. :D Happened to me once...not outnumbered as much as "I wrote an LJ post and she responded with a rant the length of an essay".
