Advising

The first two weeks of November is when the department at my University does advising. Advising is split among 7 faculty members, of which I am one. It's one of the busiest times of my work year, and makes me wonder if I am nuts for doing NaBloPoMo.  (Although that's not as nuts as NaNoWriMo.)

Not only is advising time consuming, it's extremely important that I do it well. Of course I should do all parts of my job well. But if I make a mistake in advising, I could cause someone to have to spend an extra  year in college. Not quite as awesome responsibility as say, air traffic control, but it's something to take very seriously.

Usually the upside of something that takes up so much of  your time is that it gives you something to write about. Alas, this is not the case with advising. Because of FERPA ( a privacy law), I can't write much in here about advising. Heck, I'm probably violating some section of FERPA by just saying I have advisees.

Stupid FERPA

I understand. My job right now's kind of like that...only not as serious as yours. :) I've made a few pretty dumb mistakes (especially today, not a good day. :D But it's good they found them, as opposed to, well, not.)

I don't know if I can say much about it either, but it's unpacking test samples at a quality control firm. :D Advising students what they should do next year sounds so much more profound and important...I know I won't be able to handle it, the way I am now. :D But I'm sure you can!

I think you'd be surprised at what you are able to handle. You've got the right attitude, and that is 90%.
