Buffets and temptation

Everybody starts thinking about losing weight at the beginning of a new year. I am no exception, especially since I am quite overweight. My biggest problem is that there are so many buffet restaurants around here.

The worst is Shoney's. It's not the best food, but it's relatively cheap, and all the waitresses are sweet  young women who call me "darlin'" and "honey" and "sweetheart". I just can't stay away from that. That and the fried chicken. There is always plenty of fried chicken.

I think about another story of a man who fought off temptation. When Thomas Aquinas was considering the Dominican order, his brothers sent a woman  to seduce him. Even though she offered feminine delights that went way way past terms of endearment he rebuffed her and went on to become a great Catholic theologian.

Of course the analogy breaks down in some places. I am not the exceptional man that Thomas Aquinas was, and I'm sure I'm not as strong. Also, the lady in this story didn't also offer all the fried chicken he could eat. Even a strong willed ascetic like Aquinas might have broken down if that was thrown into the pot.

Stay tuned.
