Two etiquette puzzles

  1. Etiquette says that if you are eating in front of somebody, you should offer the other person some of what you are eating. But what if they are altoids? Or any other kind of breath mint? Might the person infer you are trying to tell them something about their breath, rather than merely being polite and generous?
  2. Suppose a man is on an elevator with a woman he doesn't know, and she is going to the same floor as him. What should he do when they arrive at their mutual destination? Traditional etiquette of course says "ladies first." But in the barbaric unchivalrous times we live in, a lady might be wary about a man she doesn't know walking after her.
Modern manners is a difficult business. Postmodern manners are even trickier.
