Just plain other things

I went to pay a bill the old-fashioned way today, and bought a sheet of 39 cent stamps. This is the first time since the price went up from 37 to 39 cents that I had bought stamps. It mad me sad. Not because of the increased cost. I can afford the extra 2 cents per stamp. It is because they are not 37 cents anymore. I was actually happy when they went up to 37 cents.

37 is my favorite number. It is the coolest number there is (and when you consider how many numbers there are, this is quite a distinction!). I first became enamored with the number 37 while watching comedian and voice actor Charles Fleischer talk about it during a stand-up routine on the tonight show.

37 has really caught on like wildfire since then. There is even a website devoted to the number 37. So I take some comfort in knowing that I am not alone in my sadness in the change of a postage stamp price.

The winners of the record powerball jackpot are on the cover of USA today. I had seen excerpts of their press conference on television as well. They are such charming, likeable people that it almost, ALMOST mind you, made me glad that they won instead of me. There were so many great quotes. Like the guy who said "You talk about it, 'Hey, what are you going to do?' Buy an island. Buy an airplane. In reality, I'm not really a fan of flying, and I don't like water,". You gotta love a guy like that.

Quang Dao, a South Vietnamese refugee said of America "I came here to be free.". And he got the bonus plan.

Apparently there were some workers at the meat-packing plant who didn't participate. One of the winners said they had no reason for ill will towards the winners. And they shouldn't. The winners just greatly enhanced their job security.

I'll bet none of them care about the price of a postage stamp.

In the immortal words of Quang Dao, "This is a great country!".
