popped collars

I read with interest hellblazer99 's latest post , which dealt with  upturned collars. I guess it's good I have young friends, because I had no idea they were trendy (or trendy until recently.)

I've been wearing upturned collars for years. Well, sometimes. If I dress in a hurry (which is often) the collar is sometimes
upturned without my knowledge. This has been going on since I've been dressing myself.

Years ago, I had a close female friend who always patiently listened to all of my woes and stories of unrequited love. One day she noticed my upturned collar and fixed it for me. "Oh doc", she said to me, "women might pay more attention to you if you took better care of yourself." I couldn't help but think "but a woman is paying attention to me now. And it's because I wasn't taking care of myself." So she gave me  no incentive to make sure my collar was down.

After reading hb's post though, I think I will start to be more careful to keep my collar down. Instead of thinking I am some poor soul in need of their maternal attentions, ladies might think I am a 52-year old man pathetically trying to look trendy. Yikes!!

You have my deepest gratitude, hellblazer.

Don't feel bad. I honestly did not take offense.

Your post just made me think of my own popped collar experience, and I thought this was a good opportunity to tell that story about my friend. I was mostly oblivious to your passionate dislike of popped collars. (Yes, I really can be that oblivious!)

And really, what's a little irrational hatred between friends? :)
