Anna Nicole Smith

Anna Nicole Smith has died. I am honestly sad about it, but I have no idea why. I was not a big fan.

I guess part of it was that she had a sad life. She was passed around from household to household when she was a child. As an adult, she had to deal with the death of a child, something no one should ever have to deal with.

And she left behind a baby girl who is going to have a lot questions about her mother. That's heartbreaking. I hope the paternity fight gets resolved before she is old enough for it to have any emotional impact.

The one time I saw Larry Birkhead  (one of the two men claiming to be the child's father) being interviewed on TV, he impressed me as a caring and decent guy. Maybe that's naive. But so many men refuse to take responsibility for the children they father, it's refreshing to see someone not just accepting responsibiity, but actually fighting for it. Time will tell if I am right about him.

The other contender is Howard K Stern. I don't know about that guy. He has that creepy Clintonesque quality of  being connected to way too many dead people. Again though, time will tell.

In addition to being a pop culture icon, Smith may have helped create legal precedent in the case of Marshall vs. Marshall. It was mostly known as "that case where Anna Nicole Smith went to the Supreme Court". It could however, affect the jurisdiction of Federal courts in probate matters. It will be interesting to see what ramifications it has.

Rest in peace, Anna. You deserve it as much as any of the rest of us do.
